In Times Past: Fourth of July celebrations of the past

Parades, patriotic music and speeches, food with drink, fireworks, the nation’s colors, complete with “loud Huzzas.” That is how the first anniversary of the Fourth of July was celebrated in Philadelphia in 1777. The observances on that day had all the elements of future Commemorations of the nation’s birth.
