New restaurant owner fulfills dreams

WOODSVILLE—A Central Street restaurant reopened under new ownership on Monday. Lily Hoang, of Wells River, purchased New Century Chinese this summer. Dreaming of restaurant ownership since she first came to the United States in 1992, Hoang now calls New Century hers.

Sports fields back before DRB

BRADFORD—For the second time in a little over a month, a proposed athletic fields development on a 26-acre parcel on the Lower Plain was subject to a public hearing before the Development Review Board on Monday.

NORTH HAVERHILL—A judge has rejected a request by a Grafton County senior staff member for a restraining order against the county’s elected Register of Deeds.

New law sheds light on nonpublic minutes

WOODSVILLE—During its regularly scheduled meeting on Aug. 14, the Haverhill Selectboard reviewed nonpublic session meeting minutes from 2022 and 2023 to determine whether they should remain sealed or whether they can be disclosed to the public.

Murder trial faces delay

NORTH HAVERHILL—The trial of a Lyme man accused of murdering his cousin in Orford in 2021 has been delayed after his attorneys claim a psychiatric evaluation found him not competent.

Vershire man sentenced on weapons charge

BOSTON—A Vershire man has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison after pleading guilty to weapons possession. Dominick Bailey, 57, and a co-defendant attempted to trade guns for drugs in November 2019 when police in Massachusetts arrested them in a sting.

Bradford committee to lead homelessness response

BRADFORD—The Bradford Selectboard voted last week to ask a committee formed in the early days of the pandemic to lead efforts to find accommodations for the influx of homeless. Bradford Resilience is chaired by state Rep. Monique Priestley, who said the group is ready to work with partners such as Little Rivers Health Care and Clara Martin Center to find short- and long-term solutions to homelessness.

Old building charm shines through in new studio

CORINTH—Neysa Russo recently purchased the historic Willis Theatre on Center Road in Corinth moving The Felting Studio there from the Lower Plain in Bradford.  She hopes to keep much of the 178-year-old building’s charm intact, although some restorations are planned.

Restraining order sought against elected official

NORTH HAVERHILL—Several Grafton County employees have accused the elected Register of Deeds of creating a hostile work environment and bullying behavior. The animosity has prompted one senior staff member to seek a restraining order against Kelley Monahan, D-Orford.
