FAIRLEE—Nearly two-thirds of residents attending a special town meeting on Feb. 24 voted to retain an ordinance regulating short-term rentals. The selectboard adopted the ordinance last year to aid enforcement of the town’s zoning bylaws.
BARNET—When Barnet artist Edward Kadunc was shown a photo of a Civil War Union Army captain posed with four young black men possibly soldiers themselves, the unusual image instantly intrigued him. He knew he had to paint it. This is Part 2; Part 1 was in the Feb. 21 edition.
NEWBURY—Alma Roystan is closing one chapter of her life after 27 years on the Newbury Selectboard. Roystan, who is not seeking reelection, will leave the board when her term expires on town meeting day next week.
BRADFORD—Those who make us dig the deepest leave the most lasting impression. Shirley Beresford, a long-time Bradford resident who died on Jan. 26 at age 92, demanded a lot out of those around her. She expressed herself with no hint of fear or hesitation. In return, she was fair and respectful; a renaissance woman who was watchful guardian and repository of all things Bradford and its schools.
CORINTH—Several fire- fighters had a scare at a structure fire in Corinth when the roof collapsed while they were inside the building fighting the blaze. On Feb. 13 at 8:56 a.m., the Corinth Fire Department responded to a first-alarm structure fire at 1817 Taplin Hill Road. Bradford, Newbury, and Tri-Village fire departments also responded.
NORTH HAVERHILL—In 2020, 17-year-old Sierra Longmoore crashed the family car in Newbury and suffered a massive brain injury. Her critical condition left little hope that she would survive even the airlift to the hospital. Six months later, Sierra was back at school, working with a tutor to complete her senior year. Now, after graduating college, Sierra’s mission is to support other traumatic brain injury patients and their families through charity and by sharing her story.
BARNET—Edward Kadunc visited the Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, area on a trip with his cousin when he was a teenager, awakening in him a hunger to learn everything he could about Civil War-era abolitionists.
